Proportioned to the table
A dining fixture is specified from the table, not the room: roughly half to two-thirds of the table's width, hung so the lowest crystal clears the sightline across it. A long table is better served by a linear or rectangular composition than by a round one, which lights the center and leaves the ends dim.
How the light behaves
Crystal above a dining table does two things at once – it throws refracted light across the ceiling and returns a bright point in the glassware below. Crystal color changes that noticeably: clear reads cool and sharp, champagne and amber warm the whole table.
