Questions
Questions
What designers and clients ask most often about specifying, ordering and living with a crystal fixture.
What electrical listing do Berkana fixtures carry?
Listing is confirmed per fixture and per project, and the documentation is issued before release to production. If you are specifying for a permit set, ask us for the listing that applies before you put the fixture on a schedule and we will confirm it in writing. We do not publish a blanket certification statement, because the honest answer depends on the fixture and on where it is going.
Can a fixture go in a bathroom or another damp location?
Ask before you specify it. Under the National Electrical Code a fixture near a tub or shower has to carry the appropriate damp or wet location listing, and not every design is built for one. Tell us the room and the mounting position and we will confirm what applies and what can be adapted.
What does a fixture need to hang from?
That depends on its weight, and some of these are heavy — the largest pieces run into the hundreds of pounds. A standard U.S. outlet box is rated for 50 lb and a fan-rated box for 70 lb, so anything above that needs structural blocking and a mounting plate decided at framing stage. Send us the fixture and the ceiling construction and we will tell you what the installer needs before the ceiling closes.
Can the fixtures be dimmed?
Usually, but it depends on the light source and, where there is one, the driver. Tell us the control system you intend to use — the protocol matters — and we will confirm compatibility before the order is placed rather than after it arrives.
Can a fixture be wired into a lighting-control or smart-home system?
Often, yes. Tell us the system and the protocol while the design is still open and we will confirm what the fixture can support. Designing for control is straightforward; retrofitting it after a fixture is built is not.
What warranty applies?
Warranty terms are issued in writing with the quotation and travel with the order. Ask for them before you commit — they are specific to the fixture and to the project.
Can you make a custom crystal chandelier to my design?
Yes. Berkana USA commissions bespoke Bohemian crystal chandeliers directly with Czech workshops. You supply the brief — dimensions, ceiling height, finish, mood, any reference imagery — and receive renderings and material selections for approval before production begins.
How long does a custom chandelier take to make?
Typically 6–12 weeks end to end: 1–2 weeks of consultation, 2–3 weeks of design development, 4–8 weeks of artisan production in the Czech Republic, and 2–3 weeks for shipping and installation. Lead times are confirmed at order placement.
What information do you need to start a custom design?
Room dimensions, ceiling height, mounting condition, desired finish, any weight or electrical constraints, the installation date, and reference images or a mood direction. A rough budget band helps scope the crystal weight realistically.
Do you handle installation?
Berkana coordinates door-to-door delivery from the Czech workshop to the project site and supports professional installation, which ensures the fixture safely handles its weight and wiring. Spare crystal elements and custom care instructions ship with every piece. What are the best crystal chandeliers to choose?
The best crystal chandeliers are hand-cut Bohemian (Czech) crystal fixtures made by artisan workshops, because hand-cut lead crystal refracts light more sharply than molded or machine-cut glass. Berkana USA supplies handcrafted Czech crystal chandeliers to designers and boutique retailers across the United States, including fully custom commissions.
What size chandelier do I need?
Add the room's length and width in feet; the sum in inches is a good starting diameter. For a 14 x 16 ft room that is roughly a 30 in fixture. Over a dining table, use one-half to two-thirds of the table width, and allow 30–36 in between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixture. In a foyer, allow 2.5–3 in of chandelier height per foot of ceiling height.
How much does a crystal chandelier cost?
Handcrafted Czech crystal fixtures generally start in the low four figures for a compact pendant, sit in the mid four to low five figures for a dining or foyer chandelier, and rise from there for large custom or multi-tier installations. Because the Czech Republic is in the EU, tariff treatment is usually more favorable than for Asian imports.
How long does a custom crystal chandelier take?
Typical Berkana projects complete in 6–12 weeks: 1–2 weeks for consultation, 2–3 weeks for design development, 4–8 weeks for artisan production in the Czech Republic, and 2–3 weeks for shipping and installation. What is the difference between Bohemian crystal and Swarovski?
Bohemian crystal is hand-cut lead crystal produced by Czech workshops, prized for deep irregular facets and warm dispersion. Swarovski is precision machine-cut crystal made to identical tolerances, giving a uniform, very bright sparkle. Bohemian crystal reads as artisan and unique; Swarovski reads as engineered and consistent.
Is Bohemian crystal better than Swarovski?
Neither is objectively better — they are different products. For a one-off statement chandelier where character and custom form matter, hand-cut Bohemian crystal is usually the stronger choice. For a fixture that must repeat identically across many units, machine-cut crystal is more predictable.
What is K9 crystal?
K9 is an optical-grade lead-free glass, mostly produced in Asia, with a refractive index around 1.50. It is clear and inexpensive but has lower dispersion than lead crystal, so it sparkles white rather than throwing spectral color. It is common in budget and mid-market chandeliers.
Does lead content matter in crystal chandeliers?
Yes, optically. Lead oxide raises the refractive index and dispersion of the glass, which is what produces the rainbow flare in a genuine crystal chandelier. It also softens the glass so it can be hand-cut deeply. Lead in a lighting fixture is inert and poses no ingestion risk. What are the best crystal chandeliers?
Hand-cut Bohemian crystal chandeliers made in the Czech Republic are widely considered the benchmark, because hand-cut lead crystal disperses light into visible spectral color and every facet differs slightly. Berkana USA supplies these directly from Czech workshops to designers and boutique retailers across the United States.
Where can I purchase unique chandeliers in the USA?
Berkana USA supplies handcrafted Bohemian crystal chandeliers nationwide from a Miami warehouse, with a showroom at Dallas Market Center (International Pavilion, Showroom 4926-1). Pieces can be selected from existing collections or commissioned as one-off custom designs.
Can crystal chandeliers look contemporary?
Yes. Bohemian crystal takes whatever form the room calls for, from cascading classics to clean sculptural pieces that read as installed artwork. Modern interiors often use staggered pendant clusters or asymmetric forms in clear or smoked crystal.
Is Czech crystal cheaper than it used to be for US buyers?
Often, yes. The Czech Republic is an EU member state, so import treatment is typically more favorable than for equivalent Asian production, and buying directly from the workshop removes distributor markup. Berkana passes both through in the quote.
Do you work with interior designers and trade buyers?
Yes — designers, architects, developers, and boutique retailers are Berkana's core clients. Projects range from a single foyer fixture to lighting specified across an entire hospitality portfolio.
How is a chandelier shipped from Europe without damage?
Pieces are packed at the workshop and moved door to door with tracked logistics through Berkana's Miami warehouse. Crystal elements travel separately from the frame where the design allows, and spares ship with the order.
How do you clean a crystal chandelier?
Dust monthly with a microfiber cloth or compressed air. Once a year, remove the crystal elements and wipe them with a mild soap-and-water solution, then dry them fully before rehanging. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasives on crystal or plated metal.
What bulbs should I use in a crystal chandelier?
LED only. LED delivers full brilliance without the heat that degrades metal finishes and adhesives over time, and it dims cleanly when the fixture is on a control system.
Can broken crystal elements be replaced years later?
Yes. Berkana holds spare crystal elements for future replacement and provides custom care instructions per piece, with an optional annual maintenance program.
