Over an island
An island wants light along its length rather than at its center, which is why a linear composition or a run of separate pendants usually beats a single chandelier. Spacing is set from the island's dimensions, and the drop is set so the fixture clears the sightline of anyone standing across the counter.
Practical considerations
A kitchen fixture is closer to heat and airborne cooking residue than one in a dining room. Crystal cleans easily, but the arrangement matters: open compositions with accessible elements are far easier to maintain than densely dressed ones. We will say plainly which designs suit a working kitchen and which do not.
